About the Event
🌊 Hike Across the Pilgrim's Way to Holy Island – 19 July 2025
Join Hiking Buddies UK for a truly unique and memorable coastal adventure – a barefoot hike across the famous Pilgrim’s Way to Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island. This ancient tidal route is only safely walkable during specific times, and we’ve got the perfect window to enjoy it!
Lunch Meet-up: 11:30 AM at The Barn at Beal (optional but required if wanting to use their carpark)
Set Off: 12:45 PM from The Barn at Beal
Start Crossing: From 1:00 PM (safe window: 12:30 – 20:45)
Return: Back on the mainland by approx. 6:00 PM
Distance: Approx. 12 km total (4.5 km each way plus island time)
We’ll begin with a short 0.75 km stroll from The Barn at Beal to the causeway, then follow the iconic line of wooden poles across the sands and tidal flats of Lindisfarne Bay. The outward crossing takes about 90 minutes, with the return trip usually a little quicker. Once on the island, we’ll explore a bit before making our way back well within the safe tide window.
👣 Barefoot-friendly! July is ideal for barefoot walking across the sand and mud – it’s a fantastic sensory experience. Footwear will be needed at the start and once we reach the island. A towel or cloth to clean and dry your feet will definitely come in handy.
🍽 Optional Pre-Hike Lunch: A table is booked at The Barn at Beal at 11:30 AM under Hiking Buddies UK so we can use their carpark. Come early, grab a bite, and meet your fellow hikers before we head out! A small discounted menu will be provided to us.
🍽 Optional Camping: You can also camp at The Barn at Beal if you wish. They are aware of our trip so you can book under Hiking Buddies UK via telephone or use their website: https://thebarnatbeal.co.uk/camping
🚗 Parking: We’re awaiting final confirmation on the reopening of the main causeway car park, which looks promising and should accommodate up to 40 cars. Updates will be shared closer to the date, but if its still closed the suggested car parking will be at The Barn at Beal. I will need reg numbers to ensure numbers can be accommodated.
🌤 Weather: July usually treats us well, but as always in the UK, come prepared for changeable conditions.
Don’t miss this chance to walk in the footsteps of pilgrims through breathtaking landscapes, with great company and plenty of photo-worthy moments. Looking forward to seeing you there!
